Nature Walk Sessions

Where are sessions held? There are two locations to choose from, both part of the El Dorado park system in Long Beach, CA. We can meet either at El Dorado East, at the archery range parking lot for a wide, paved walk in a beautiful park, or at the Nature Center across the street, for a dirt-path nature experience. Your first session will be held either in my office, or doing an online video chat to gather intake information and determine which location would be the best fit.

What can I expect? Our first few sessions will be you giving me your history, telling me about what brought you to therapy, and getting to know each other. We will quickly jump into talking about your goals, what you'd like to get out of these sessions, and explore your patterns, relationships, boundaries, sense of self-worth, or anything else that comes up for you. We will walk and talk - I'll let you set the pace. This is not intended to be a fitness routine or workout, although walking certainly has many physical benefits that are linked to mental, emotional, and overall well-being. Many of my clients are juggling parenthood, work, relationships, and the physical and emotional load for their whole family. Therapy, walking, and being outdoors are all different pieces to an overall wellness puzzle.

Wear comfortable walking clothes, and I'll do the same. Both outdoor locations do have other people present, so we will discuss how to maintain your confidentiality in those settings. We will make sure we do not walk the same course with others for very long, and discuss what we would say if we ran into anyone we know. It is my policy and ethical duty to maintain your confidentiality, and I take that very seriously. Both locations were chosen because it is common to see pairs of people walking and talking, so we will blend right in.

If weather is a factor, we will talk ahead of time and meet in my office instead (roughly a ten minute drive from both locations). Parents of infants and babies, feel free to bring those kiddos along with you, either in your favorite carrier or stroller. If you will be using a stroller, I suggest we stick with the paved path at El Dorado park. Please consult with a doctor before beginning our Nature Walk sessions.

Art in Nature Sessions: I also provide art-nature sessions. We will find a comfortable and quiet place to sit and use my travel-art-kit to aid the therapeutic process. Using colored pencils, water colors, charcoal, and other mediums with nature around you and a licensed therapist with art specialty to guide you, can be an incredibly helpful tool for exploring your own feelings about your place in the world.

How much do they cost? Each 50 minute session is $140, payable by PayPal, cash, or check. I do not take insurance, but I can provide a "super bill" to you, if your insurance company will reimburse you. Sessions are usually scheduled for 50 minute sessions, once a week, but that changes depending on your needs, schedule, and progress. Depending on our walking pace, we may need to increase your sessions to accomplish our chosen loop. Your fee will increase based on increased time - but we will discuss that before you get charged.

The parks themselves do cost money to enter. My usual fee is $150, but I reduce my fee by $10 *for sessions at El Dorado Park and El Dorado Nature Center Only* in order to allow you to spend the difference on entry fee. Entrance booths take cash only on the day of, or you can purchase annual passes at the Nature Center office.

What do I need to do to make an appointment? Go to "make an appointment" and find an opening in my calendar. You'll be asked to make an account, which will ask for your name, email, address and will track your bookings for you. Once you have logged in, you will see a menu on the right side with forms and directions for logging in/getting to your appointments. Print out the forms, fill them out, and email them back to me. Once you've paid via PayPal, I'll know you have confirmed your appointment time.
